Yoichi Wada on FFXIII's Reception

Date: July 12, 2010
Updated By: Squirrel Emperor

In a interview with Gamasutra, Yoich Wada was asked about Final Fantasy XIII's reception.

Now that Final Fantasy XIII has launched globally, in the end were you satisfied with its performance and the audience reaction to the title?

YW: Looking at the numbers alone, it is pretty good, because we were able to release the latest Final Fantasy in all three markets of Japan, United States, and Europe in a very short period of time, and we were able to reach 5 million units rapidly -- and I think this product will grow further. But when it comes to the customers' reaction to the quality of the game, some value it highly and some are not very happy with it.

What do you think about how the game turned out?

YW: I think this is a product that was able to meet the expectations for those who know Final Fantasy. There are all kinds of games around in the market today. Should Final Fantasy become a new type of the game or should Final Fantasy not become a new type of game? The customers have different opinions. It's very difficult to determine which way it should go.

What do you think? Should Final Fantasy become a new type of game? Do you think Wada or SquareEnix in general are still in touch with those who know Final Fantasy and what they expect from the franchise? Were you happy with Final Fantasy XIII? Finalfantasykid, I'm an old fan of the series and I've played all the games of the main story since VI (except XI), and right now I'm playing IV. I've also played some spin offs, but not all of them. My fave is probably VIII, and I'm not really considering XIII because it's new and I might be biased because of my passion for the story. I've never been so immersed in a game story like this one, getting involved with the feelings and struggles of the characters. When I was playing it heavily, I even dreamt with them, haha. I hope the other games go back to the old style too, I missed lots of things in this, but it didn't ruin my experience.

It was no doubt that it wasn't the best Final Fantasy in the series, but I've certainly played a lot worse. For some reason I couldn't stand FFXII and couldn't get through it because it was so boring. I liked the concept of it, but still wasn't good. FF XIII is in the middle for me, it wasn't the best, but it wasn't the worst either.

I just hope that FF Versus XIII goes back to the golden ages of Final Fantasy (FF VII - FF X), and actually has the open world with the airships. That's my two cents though.

I agree with Doctor Arzt. The game was just entertaining enough for me to complete it, but I will never play it again. I already sold my copy to get some money back. They talk about immersiveness and all that crap, but the thing that makes a game immersive for me - hinting at a larger world that is living and dynamic - is not the detail in the environments. It's the story and the characters. Both were severely lacking, and so both Pulse and Cacoon never felt any larger than the paths I was walking on. And Wada has it backwards.

The best story you've ever seen in a game? Jesus. Up until where they meet up at Hope's house, the story was progressing nicely. Everything was set up for it to expand dramatically and lots of cool stuff to happen. But it didn't. Nothing happened. The game came to a thundering stop. All the characters just walked around aimlessly for the rest of the game, moping while they did it. And occassionally the Pope appeared to tell them what to do. The story was AWFUL.

I loved the game and was very satisfied with it. I missed exploring towns and doing other types of sidequests, but it was an awesome game for me. It had the most important things a RPG should have to me: great story (the best i've ever seen in a game), captivating characters and good battle system. FFXIII had all.

@ Doctor Arzt, i personally am a avid Final Fantasy fan, played all the games and so on, and i can say FFXIII is one of the top 5 FF games i've played. Oh and by the way, the biggest failure ever in the FF series is either FFXII or FFX-2.

FFXIII, taken as a traditional Final Fantasy game, was a complete failure. Taken as a new style of game, it's still an amazing failure. It'll effect Versus XIII's sale numbers no end.
